Woohoo, I made a new art journal and mixed media portrait video! 🙂 In this video tutorial I’m showing how I created the art journal page Who Are You, that I wrote about previously.

Video Hop

I made this video because I was invited by Shannon Green (who you might know from Journaling by 5s) to participate in a so-called video hop.

For this video hop we’re with 13 people who are all publishing an arts/craft video on YouTube today and are linking to each other’s videos in a specific order. This is a fun way to get to know new and interesting YouTube channels that you might not have heard about!

Supplies I used in this video

For the portrait that you see me creating in this video, I have used the following supplies:

  • I am working in a Strathmore Mixed Media Visual Journal: this journal is 22.9 x 30.5 cm (9 x 12 inch) and has 190 gsm (90 lb.) paper. It is spiral bound, which I wouldn’t recommend for making spreads but for a single page I like it because you can fold the book completely over.
  • Gesso (I am using Golden)
  • Pastel pencils in the colors Prussian blue, Raw Umber, French Grey Dark, Terracotta, and Titanium White (Derwent)
  • Tinted charcoal pencil, color Burnt Earth (Derwent)
  • Stabilo All pencil, black
  • Acrylic craft paint in the colors light Antique White (DecoArt), Fawn, Dusty Rose and Deep Periwinkle (Americana)
  • Soft pastels in the colors Grey 27, RE 13, LT 14, Grey 9, Grey 8, and Dark 17 (Unison)

Adoro el retrato y siluetas cuerpos desnudos sobretodo hiperealistas.. soy artista desde niña dibujo, pinto pero hasta ahora estoy tratando de mejorar y aprender , entender las técnicas las cuales aplicaba sin saber sus nombres..gracias por compartir.

  4. I don’t have a website yet, but I’m an artist , more of a dark black ink artist, I sketch on flat canvas boards and I am a new artist by a couple years! Came out of nowhere , never had any classes or anything , I’ve been watching you a long time a couple years anyways and I think you are an absolutely wonderful artist, I love your accent and how you describe what you are sketching , you make it seem so delicious if that makes sense? I bought the creamy oil pastels and can’t do what you do but I give it a try , my art tends to be more fantasy for whatever reason and you are more realistic ! But I love your technique and your tutorials! Thank You for letting me learn from you !

  6. So you can paint directly onto pastels without the pastel getting into the paint? And When you have a painting all finished, is a fixative needed? I really liked this video and found it on You Tube, in researching how to use pastel & acrylic together — Thanks.

    1. Thanks Kim, glad you liked the video! I used the pastel over the paint, not the other way round I believe. And no, I usually don’t use a fixative.

  7. This is fabulous, exactly what I have been looking for. I decided after a very expensive and arduous painting Workshop that watercolor is just not for me. I am absolutely ready for mixed-media. I am going to follow your classes having had success in the past teaching myself with YouTube. Thank you so much for this opportunity.

    1. Glad you liked the video, Gargi! Soft pastels are not the same as oil pastels. Soft pastels are dry (like charcoal), oil pastels are oily. You can use them, but the result will be different.

    2. Garcia, soft pastels and oil pastels are not the same! Soft pastels is similar to chalk and quite dry. Oil pastels are waxy and oil based, kind of like a crayon!
      I just looked at the date…… ha! I’m sure you have found your answer long before now? Just joined this site, so hence, the question and reply! Good luck “Arting with either medium”! I am in the USA, where are you? Just wondering! Fun to communicate with others of the same love of art! Have a blessed day!
