Ooh these colors!!

Pastel set

Recently I indulged myself and bought this wonderful soft pastel set! Yayy! Look at those colors! It’s the portrait set by Unison, containing 36 crayons.

My favorite brands for soft pastels are Schmincke and Unison. I just love how soft and smooth they are. Yes, they will crumble and break easily and leave a lot of particles. And they are not cheap. But they come in such magnificent colors and you can layer them so beautifully. And each one of these Unison pastels is handmade!

So now I just have to find the courage and break each and every one of them! Usually it’s good to break your pastels in various lengths, so you can use them on the side and work with them in broader strokes. But with such a beautiful set it eh… well it just takes a bit of courage… 😉

  1. What a great indulgence. I’ve never used soft pastels, but these look so luscious! It makes my heart leap just seeing all those lovely colors lined up in their creamy glory. I have them on my wishlist now. The list of art supplies I want seems to be endless!

    1. Oh yes, I know all too well about that endless list! For me though the pastels are becoming one of my favorite supplies and I use them all the time now. I can really recommend trying them out! I would advise to just buy a few from open stock, and to buy a good brand. 🙂

  2. Ahhh. I’ve broken 1″pieces from every pastel set I own. You are right…it is hard to do! The set I most lust after is Girault. I love their medium softness and diameter size. Have you ever come across Roche from Paris? I have a few color ranges, but by the time I paid the exchange rate from Paris, they are waaay too precious to break! They are fabulous! And now I’m doing mixed media instead of straight soft pastel, but my working setup is just a few steps away!

    1. Ooh I didn’t know those brands yet, Vicki! Always good to know… 😉 And since I found out that the pastels are also fabulous in mixed media, I’m just totally in love with them!
