New video – Black as Night
View the supplies list

As I wrote in my previous post, I made a new art journal and mixed media portrait video! I got such a huge response on my last video Walking the Path, that I just couldn’t wait to make another one. 🙂

This portrait was created because I was asked to make an art journal page and to be featured as guest artist in the Fabulous and Free Art Journaling Challenge by Susan Wojtkowski from Irreversibly Moi, with the theme Black as Night.

Supplies I used in this video

For the portrait that you see me creating in this video, I have used the following supplies:

  • I am working in an art journal that I made myself using 300 gsm (140 lb.) cold press watercolor paper. This paper can hold a lot of media and water, so I really enjoy working in it. It doesn’t really buckle that fast. The page size is 20.3 x 30.5 cm (8 x 12 inch).
  • Gesso (I am using Golden)
  • Pastel pencils in the colors prussian blue, raw umber, french grey dark, terracotta, and titanium white (Derwent)
  • Acrylic paint in the colors blue, titanium white and raw umber (I am using Golden)
  • Stabilo All pencil, black
  • Soft pastels in various colors (I am using Schmincke and Unison)
  • Oil paint sticks in the colors light blue, payne’s grey, flesh ochre, and antique white (Sennelier)

  1. beautiful how you do the layers for the face, so I want to try it. My favourite art is portraits and this very helpful, thank you.

    1. Thank you so much Inge! Glad my tutorial was of help and inspiring for you to try it out yourself!

  2. I loved this video and your painting. I have a question…does holding your pencil the way you do make it easier to make lighter more free marks. Or is there another reason you hold it that way.

    1. Good question Teri! It’s exactly what you are saying: it helps to stay more light, free and loose in my mark making. It’s really worth it to try it out, to see what it does for you. Thanks for stopping by!
