Several weeks ago I was asked to make an art journal page and to be featured as guest artist in the Fabulous and Free Art Journaling Challenge by Susan Wojtkowski. The theme of the challenge that created a journal page for, was Black as Night.

I loved doing this challenge! I have chosen to paint a face which is coming out of – or going into, that’s just a matter of your own interpretation – the darkness of the night. While working I chose not to use black as a color in my work, but to symbolize it using dark blue shades instead (well ok, except for the Stabilo All pencil that I used in a few areas 😉 ).

I really like the effect that all the layers are creating on the skin. There’s lots of texture and the skin seems to be glowing a bit, especially on the cheek and the forehead.

I also filmed the process and made a tutorial video of it:

Supplies I used in this video

For the portrait that you see me creating in this video, I have used the following supplies:

  • I am working in an art journal that I made myself using 300 gsm (140 lb.) cold press watercolor paper. This paper can hold a lot of media and water, so I really enjoy working in it. It doesn’t really buckle that fast. The page size is 20.3 x 30.5 cm (8 x 12 inch).
  • Gesso (I am using Golden)
  • Pastel pencils in the colors prussian blue, raw umber, french grey dark, terracotta, and titanium white (Derwent)
  • Acrylic paint in the colors blue, titanium white and raw umber (I am using Golden)
  • Stabilo All pencil, black
  • Soft pastels in various colors (I am using Schmincke and Unison)
  • Oil paint sticks in the colors light blue, payne’s grey, flesh ochre, and antique white (Sennelier)
