I have been playing in my art journal. It’s quite fun!
I’m experimenting lately to work with limited supplies, different from what I normally use: black and white marker and Neocolor II water soluble crayons in black, white, brown and turquoise. I am also challenging myself to not use an eraser.
I mainly used the brown Neocolor II crayon. The photo is a little bit darker than the actual image and the paper is a bit yellowish, so that makes the overall color a bit darker and more red. But since I worked in this journal in the evening with not a lot of light, it is actually rendered quite like I saw it when I was working on it.
The art journal I used here is a small journal I made from simple Simili Japon paper, meant for quick sketches. Quite a challenge to use for my portraits, because it is smaller than the size I normally use for portraits, while the crayons are quite thick (thicker than the pencils I often use). Also, the paper isn’t very suited to take a lot of water, so I couldn’t dilute the crayons too much.
But actually all these restrictions and the use of the simple art journal helped me to not get too attached to the image I was working on and I actually felt quite free to just play and experiment.
The turquoise I used for the accents at the end. I really like the effect of this blue color. I also added some journaling in the hair. Scribbled in such a way that no one can read it – not even I. But well… I know what is written. 😉
