The Sphere

The Sphere

This is the second painting I made tonight and just like the first one, Snakes, my idea was to paint an Ouroboros (snake biting its tail). While I was painting though, this transparent sphere appeared. It wasn’t something I had planned, it just happened.

So then according to my initial idea I tried to find a way to add the snake to it, but no matter what I tried, it just didn’t seem to fit. I drew a snake around the outer perimeter of the sphere, I drew one wrapped across the sphere, but I just didn’t like it.

Then I decided to let go of the snake idea altogether, and find out what this painting actually wanted to be. I thought of maybe adding something else around the sphere, or painting something in it, but in the end I discovered that I like it best when it’s just empty. The emptiness invites me to think of what is going on with this sphere, why it’s there and what it means.

Creating the space to create stories — that’s what I love to do with my art.

The Sphere, mixed media (acrylic paint, oil pastel and colored pencil) on canvas board. Size: 24 x 30 cm (9.4 x 11.8 inch).
